Pomeranian
The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz breed of dogs. The Pomeranian (a.k.a. ‘Pom’) may be tiny, but they are very outgoing and have a very kind, affectionate nature. Their expression is very fox-like. They can vary in colour, however, their coat type remains the same – a thick double coat with a long, flat and harsh outer coat and a soft, fluffy undercoat. The coat should be thicker around the ruff giving the Pom it’s unique ‘frill’.
The ‘teddy bear’ cut is becoming ever popular amongst pet owners of Pomeranian’s. This entails the coat being kept shorter, and the face and head being scissored round. It is not guaranteed that the coat will grow back the same, also clipping a double coated breed can impact the natural air flow which prevents the dog from overheating in warm climates.
It’s important to communicate with the owner to determine which groom they wish for their pet

Grooming Notes
- As Pomeranian’s have a thick double coat they need to be brushed regularly to prevent their soft undercoat from matting. It’s important that when brushing the focus is on getting right down to the skin – not just brushing the outer coat
- Like most double coated breeds Pomeranian’s tend to shed more in Spring and Autumn – during these periods more frequent brushing is necessary
Grooming Guide
- Pluck hair from the ear canal as necessary
- Use a damp cloth to go over the muzzle after bathing, wiping away tear stains
- Prior to bathing use a blaster to help remove loose coat, skin dander and debris from the coat
- Prior to bathing remove any serious matts or tangles using appropriate tools
- Edge ear tips with detailing/safely scissors
- Using a slicker brush and the ‘Pat & Pull’ technique, line brush every inch of the coat, right down to the skin. You can check your work using a greyhound comb with fine/wide tooth arrangement
- Be careful not to apply too much pressure when brushing to avoid discomfort for the dog. Also try to avoid repetitively brushing areas as this can cause brush burn
- Trim nails
- Trim excess fur from pads and between toes using safety scissors or a #15 – #40 blade
- Depending on the length of the coat, neaten feet and hocks using thinning scissors or a #4F blade (in reverse)
- Neaten the undercarriage line using thinning scissors
- Lightly trim sanitary area under tail with thinning scissors
