Smooth Coat Care

Smooth Coated Breeds

A smooth coat breed has one of the easiest coats to maintain. A smooth coat is sleek and shiny, and make for great pets for people who don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to grooming. Some breeds with this type of coat include a Bulldog, Beagle, Pug, Short Haired Chihuahua, Rottweiler, Labrador Retriever and a Great Dane etc.

Shampoo and Conditioner

A de-shedding shampoo will work well to loosen dead hairs and reduce any future shedding, especially when used with a rubber scrubber.

Although a conditioner is not essential for this particular coat type as there is no matting, a shine conditioner is a great add on for a smooth-coated breed.

Brushes and Sprays

Smooth-coated dogs do not need to be brushed every day. However, this is a great way to bond with your pet in addition to helping keep the oil evenly distributed over the coat and making sure the coat is free of shedding hairs and dander. A bristle brush or a grooming mit would be perfect for this.

They do not require a de-matting spray, however, a shine spray or serum will work really well on this coat. A cologne spray is also a great add on.

Coat maintenance may be minimal for a smooth-coated breed. However, there are areas that need to be maintained regularly such as nails, eyes, and ears.
